“Happiness can be found in
the darkest of times
when only one remembers to turn on the light”
-Harry Potter: Albus Dumbledore
In order for us and our families to withstand the pressures
of the world, we must be filled with light and gospel truth.
The Story of the Boy and The Room of Light
When the boy was younger, his mother taught him that we all
have rooms of light. She taught the boy to keep the lights on, the curtains parted
and to always keep the door open. It is up to us and the decisions that we make,
she taught, that determine whether our rooms are kept light or dark. A few
years went by and the boys mother passed away one morning. The boy tried his
best to do as his mother would want him to do. Days turned to weeks and weeks
turned to months, months into years. As the boy grew up he found it harder and
harder to stay away from peer pressure and the temptations of the world. Soon
Satan was in his room, telling him to shut the drapes and itd be okay to have
the lights off, just for a little bit. After a while the lights never came back
on, the drapes stayed shut and the Satan closed the door. The boy made
decisions that filled his room with trash and distractions that muddied up the
room, stained the drapes and dirtied the windows. Soon the room was far from
the state that the boys mother taught him it should always be in. The boy found
himself lost, lonely and confused. Overwhelmed with the mess that he created in
his room, he felt hopeless. One day he mustered the courage to turn on the
light in his room. After so long in darkness, the light made the boy feel good.
He then heard a knock at his door. He answered and there stood the Savior, a
vaccum in one hand and trash bags in the other ready to help the boy clean up
his room. Together with the Savior they cleaned up the room and restored it to
the clean state that it once had been in.
We all have rooms of light. It is up to us to decide how much
light we allow in our rooms. When we do make decisions that darken our rooms,
the Savior will always be there ready to help us turn back to the light, clean
up our rooms and let the light of the gospel back into our lives, only if we open the door for him. The light of Christ brings a refreshing ray
of hope to a world that often seems dark, gloomy and astray. The light of the
Savior will guide us in the dark. The Savior said, I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of
life”. Obedience brings in light.
In her talk, Sister Esplin talks of the importance of
developing our own light and spreading that light into our homes and into our
families. She says,
“One place where we best seek to be filled with light and
truth is in our own homes. The words in the chorus of the song we heard remind
us, “God gave us families to help us become what He wants us to be.”3 Families
are the Lord’s workshop on earth to help us learn and live the gospel. We come
into our families with a sacred duty to help strengthen each other spiritually.
Satan knows that in order for us and our families to
withstand the pressures of the world, we must be filled with light and gospel
truth. So he does everything in his power to dilute, distort, and destroy the
truth of the gospel and to keep us separated from that truth.”
President Monson describes the world in which we live in by
saying, “ Where once the standards of the church and the standards of society
were mostly compatible, now there is a wide chasm between and its growing even
wider.”
Though there is reason to worry about the direction the state
of the world is heading in, we have reason to be of good cheer. The Savior
said, “I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.”
The darker the world gets, the brighter and brighter the
light of Christ will become. The opportunities to do good and to find peace
will grow increasingly and it is up to us to make the decisions now to be in
position to lead our future families into the light of Christ and partake of
the blessings of the gospel.
AS evil increases in the world there is a compensatory
spiritual power for the righteous. As the world slides from its spiritual
moorings, the Lord prepares the way for those who seek him, offering them
greater assurance, greater confirmation, and greater confidence in the
spiritual direction they are traveling. The gift of the Holy Ghost becomes a
brighter light in the emerging twilight. Elder Andersen.
Our teaching in the home will be the safety guide for our
children and the iron rod in our lives. Elder Bednar said, “Correct knowledge
of and faith in the lord empower us to hush our fears because Jesus Christ is
the only source of enduring peace” and light.
The gospel of Jesus Christ and living the principles and
teaching them to our families will be the strength that will keep our lights
burning through these last days. It is my testimony that the Lord will not
leave us comfortless and that His light will ever be shining. As members of his
church it is our responsibility to lead lives of light, keep the commandments,
live our covenants and extending a hand to the down trodden. The Savior accepts
our bests effort and is there for us when we fall or when we muddy up our rooms
of light. There are always second chances and reasons to hope if we let the
light of the Savior in.
I LOVE THAT DUMBLEDORE QUOTE. What a good guy you have.
